What do you do at Great West?
My job is to help others. I help my team member achieve their goals by mentoring and coaching them. It is my responsibility to give them the tools and feedback necessary for them to excel at Great West and realize their potential. In addition to coaching, I handle all of the day-to-day claims questions and concerns that come from my staff. I do quarterly claims audits to ensure quality and compliance. I also jump in with the team and handle claims when we are particularly busy. I assist in the interview and hiring processes when we are looking to add people to our team, and I am in charge of training those new team members.
What does a typical day on the job look like for you?
There are never two days that are the same. When I get to my desk in the morning, I try to address anything that needs my immediate attention. Most days, I will have at least one meeting to attend. My goal is to connect with two of my team members per day, four days a week, just a quick 15-minute personal check up to see how they are doing. With the size of my team, this allows me to be in contact with everyone at least once every two weeks. I do this once in the morning and once later in the afternoon. One thing I have learned doing this job is that no matter how well I plan my day, it rarely goes according to that plan. There is often something that comes up that needs my attention, so I have to be flexible and be okay with the day not going according to plan.
I tend to my own claims, answer questions and emails, and take any incoming phone calls. In addition to that, I usually have file reviews to complete; I will work on these throughout the quarter so that by the end of the quarter I have completed two per adjuster. Much of my day is spent with my manager, resolving personnel issues that may arise or discussing future vision or ideas for our department.
What's challenging about your job?
I am a very goal-oriented person. I set a goal, achieve it, and move on to the next goal. In this position, I am challenged because I constantly have to leave something partially finished to take care of something else. It requires more multitasking and the ability to switch my focus from one issue to another and then back.
What is the best part about working here?
The best part about working for Great West is the work/life balance. I can leave work at work. I have three small children and another on the way. It is great that I can go home and be present with them after working all day at Great West.
What's your favorite memory from working here?
It is hard to pick one, but it is probably when I was promoted to the department supervisor role. I am very grateful that my manager took a chance on me and gave me the opportunity to prove myself.
What is your favorite benefit offered by Great West?
I think it is probably the chance to earn an annual bonus.
What advice would you give to someone who just joined our team?
Work hard, be patient, and you will be rewarded.
Did you ever think you'd be working in insurance?
My dad worked in insurance for his entire career and never had anything but good things to say. Even then, no, I never envisioned that I would follow in his footsteps. If I had known about Great West, maybe I would have, though.
