What is Respiratory Protection?
Respiratory protection, including a NIOSH-certified respirator, is designed to protect employees from harmful airborne agents. For motor carriers that haul commodities categorized as inhalation hazards, such as Anhydrous Ammonia, they may be required to provide respiratory protection to drivers and employees who may be exposed to such hazards. Employers are responsible for providing and maintaining a written respiratory protection program. This includes employee training, procedures for selecting respirators, providing employee medical evaluations, fit testing, cleaning, etc. For more information on implementing a respiratory protection program, refer to OSHA’s Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134).
